Danielle Robertson Rath a biochemist and author of “Are You a Monster or a Rock Star: A Guide to Energy Drinks – How They Work, Why They Work, and How to Use Them Safely”. In 2003, Monster energy drinks hit this US markets, and at that time she was studying for her undergraduate degree, while also maintaining two part-time jobs. She remembers that energy drinks were a helpful resource at the time to help her get through her days. But at the same time, they were very controversial within the scientific community. She devoted her work to understanding fatigue and the role of caffeine and energy drinks.

8:02 Caffeine doesn’t do anything quickly. It doesn’t hit you quickly and it doesn’t leave quickly. So you don’t really get an energy crash from the energy alone. Most of the time, it’s because you were exhausted before and the caffeine kind of revives you. And then you’re crashing because you’re going back to being how tired you were before. Or you’re crashing because there was a lot of sugar in the drink.
